Login Questions

Why can't I log in?

Are you at the correct login site?

For most institutions, you go to WebAssign.net

However, if you are enrolled in any of the following schools, go to their secure login site.

Are cookies enabled for your browser?

You must enable cookies to use WebAssign. The WebAssign cookie is only used to keep the user logged in, and it is deleted when the browser is closed.

WebAssign requires the use of cookies in order to guarantee our strict security standards. A cookie is a small file that a Web site saves on your computer when you visit that site. WebAssign's cookie file contains your username, password, and institution. This information is used to authenticate your identity while you are working in WebAssign. If we did not use this cookie, you would have to log in every time you requested your homework assignment or submitted your assignment for grading. After you log out of WebAssign, the cookie is deleted.

If you've set your browser to warn you before accepting cookies, you will receive the warning message each time you request information from WebAssign that pertains to your records.

Instructions for enabling cookies in Firefox 3.0 or later

  1. From the menubar, select Tools > Options.

  2. Click Privacy.

  3. Select Accept cookies from sites check box.

  4. Click OK.

Instructions for enabling cookies in Internet Explorer 7.0 or later

  1. From the Tools menu, select Internet Options.

  2. Click the Privacy tab.

  3. Click Advanced.

  4. Select the Override automatic cookie handling check box.

  5. Select the Always allow session cookies check box.

  6. Click OK.

  7. Click OK to close the Internet Options window.

Did you enter your login information exactly as your instructor provided it to you?

Make sure you enter the information exactly, including capitalization. Check for typos.

Are you behind a firewall?

Can you log into secure sites? Check to see if you can access another secure site such as Yahoo.

If you cannot access secure sites, then you need to open port 443 on your firewall so that you can access secure Web pages such as WebAssign. Refer to your firewall product documentation for directions.

Are you using a supported browser?

WebAssign is designed to be compatible with most browsers, but we officially support:

  • Firefox 3.0 or later, for Windows, Mac, and Linux
  • Internet Explorer 7.0 or later, for Windows
  • Safari 3.0 or later, for Windows and Mac

Javascript and cookies must be enabled in any browser.

I don't know my username, institution, or password. What should I do?

You should ask your instructor.

Institution

Your institution is your school name, usually shortened. If you are attending a university, you would enter the name associated with your school's Website domain name. For example, Harvard University has a domain name of harvard.edu and would be entered as harvard in the "Institution" field. You can also refer to our institution look-up page.

Password

If your instructor enrolled you in the WebAssign course, she set your initial password. Only your instructor can tell you the initial password, and you should change it to something you can remember. If you enrolled yourself into the WebAssign course (self-enrollment), you created your own password.

Anyone may reset their own password if they have an email address attached to their WebAssign account. Choose the Reset Password option on the login page. If you never added an email address to your WebAssign account, contact your instructor. In this case only she can reset your password for you.

Note: Purchasing a WebAssign access code does not add an email address to your account.

Can you tell me my password?

No, because we are not able to verify who is making the request. If you have forgotten your password, you have two options: ask your instructor to reset the password for you, or reset it yourself using the Reset Password link on the login page. The second option is available only if you have added an email address to your WebAssign account.

Note: Purchasing a WebAssign access code does not add an email address to your account.

I received the following message:
It appears that someone else has recently used this browser to access WebAssign. Click here to try again. If the problem persists, please contact WebAssign.
What does that mean?

Someone else has submitted a WebAssign assignment using the Web browser on the computer that you are using. Follow the instructions on the screen. If that does not work, exit or quit the browser and restart it. This action will remove any information stored about the previous user, and you should be able to log in successfully.

Access Codes

Most, but not all, students need an access code to use WebAssign. If you're not sure, check with your instructor. All classes have a free 14-day grace period based on the start date of the class.

How do I purchase an access code?

Access codes can be obtained in three different ways:

  • Purchase a textbook that is bundled with an Access Code Card, and enter the code after logging into WebAssign.
  • Purchase an Access Code Card separately at your bookstore. For this option, please visit this page before going to the bookstore. The link will allow you to easily find the matching prefix for your textbook title and ensure that you purchase the correct Access Code Card. Enter the access code after logging into WebAssign.
  • Purchase an access code online. After logging into your WebAssign account, click Purchase an access code online. A credit card is needed for this option.

What happens if I forget to enter my access code before the deadline?

After the 14-day grace period, your current and previous assignments will be hidden until you enter a valid access code to confirm class payment. When you log into WebAssign and enter the access code, your records will become visible again.

I lost my WebAssign access code card, and I have not entered my access code. What should I do?

WebAssign cannot provide replacements for lost cards. You need to make arrangements with your instructor to get another Access Code Card from your bookstore, or purchase an access code online after logging into WebAssign. Click Purchase an access code online and follow the instructions. All codes purchased through WebAssign are immediately applied to your account and do not need to be re-entered.

What happens if I enter my access code for one class and then transfer to another section?

Your instructor can transfer your access code to the new section, or you can contact us to make the transfer. Your new instructor must add you to the new section prior to the transfer.

Can I use the same access code number for more than one class?

No, each course needs a separate access code. The only exception is Access Code Cards that are labeled for multiple-term access.

Can I get a WebAssign access code online?

Yes. You can use a credit card to purchase an access code online after logging into WebAssign. Click Purchase an access code online and follow the instructions. The code will automatically be applied to your account, and we will email you the code for your records. We do not mail out individual Access Code Cards.

Other WebAssign Technical Questions

How do I know if WebAssign is down?

The WebAssign system is rarely out of order. In the unlikely event of a problem with WebAssign, the login page displays a message indicating that we are experiencing technical difficulties and your instructor is notified via email. He is able to grant an extension if necessary.

We monitor WebAssign constantly and work diligently to restore access if there is ever a problem. Over the last several years, unexpected outages have occurred only a few times and they have averaged less than twenty minutes.

If you are having problems accessing the WebAssign site, it is probably due to your connection or a problem between your connection and ours. If you are able to access the WebAssign homepage, please use the online form to contact us and provide as many details as you can about the problem. We will try to help you get onto WebAssign as quickly as possible.

I can't access WebAssign, and I must submit my homework. What should I do?

If you cannot access WebAssign, please contact your instructor and explain the problem. Your instructor may be willing to give you an extension on the due date. In addition, please let us know about any technical problems that you encounter.

I can't see my class. What should I do?

Are you logging in with the correct username?

Your instructor might have given you a new username.

Has your instructor added you to the class roster?

Your name needs to be on the class roster in order for you to see your class when you log in.

Has your class started?

Your class will not be visible until the official start date in WebAssign, which is set by your instructor.

If you are still unable to see your class, please contact us and provide as much information as you can. We will diagnose the problem and let you know when it is resolved.

I ran out of time and WebAssign won't let me submit my assignment. Can you give me an extension on my assignment?

Extensions can only be granted by your instructor. The WebAssign staff cannot grant extensions for any reason.

I used up all my submissions and just need one more to get a perfect score. Can you give me another submission?

Additional submissions can only be granted by your instructor. The WebAssign staff cannot grant additional submissions for any reason.

I am sure I submitted my homework, but it is no longer there.

WebAssign is designed to ensure that assignments cannot be lost by prohibiting the system from deleting information.

Do you have a live Internet connection?

WebAssign only works if you are connected to the Internet. If you lose your Internet connection while working in WebAssign, you will receive a "time out" error message.

Has the "Last View Date" passed for this assignment?

If the date has passed, you will no longer be able to see the assignment. Check with your classmates and see if they are having the same problem. If the issue is universal, contact your instructor and ask if she can modify the "Last View Date" to make the assignment visible again.

If you are still concerned that your homework has been lost, please contact your instructor, who can verify if your homework is in the database. Always remember to save and submit your homework.

I need assistance with one of my assignments. Can you help me with my assignment?

Only your instructor or teaching assistant can help you with the content of your assignments. If you are having a technical problem, contact WebAssign using the online form.

WebAssign is grading me incorrectly. What should I do?

Contact WebAssign using the online form. Provide details including your username, full name, class and section, the name of the assignment, and the question numbers or problem numbers that are incorrectly graded. We'll research the problem and get back to you with a resolution.

Why did WebAssign lose my points?

WebAssign is designed to ensure that assignments and points cannot be lost by prohibiting the system from deleting information.

Did your instructor change the assignment? On rare occasions, changes to the assignment might affect the randomization procedure and generate a new set of problems for each student. If that happens, you will need to rework each problem using the new randomized values. We recommend that you keep written notes of your solution methodology in case this situation occurs.

If no changes have been made to the assignment, contact us using the online form. Provide your user information, class name, assignment title, and any other details that you think are relevant. We will research the problem and respond to your inquiry.
