The Excel Spreadsheet Tutorial consists of two elements which can be used together or independently of one another: The Excel Spreadsheet Tutorial
and Workshop Physics Tools. The tutorial is a self-paced introduction to Excel designed for physics students. Skills from basic spreadsheet use to
graphing and least-squares fitting are covered. Workshop Physics Tools is a set of macros that extend Excel to perform common graphing, curve fitting,
and formula translation tasks.
Once students work through the eight-lesson self-study tutorial, taking a total of four hours, they are prepared to work most textbook spreadsheet
problems and to perform laboratory data analysis and graphing on their own. The tutorial is directed at all the major skills students need for spreadsheet
use in physics and addresses the common difficulties they face. Tasks within each lesson test the readiness to move forward. Each lesson concludes
with a few exercises for the student to attempt on their own. Reference screens and formulas ensure that your students will remain on track.

The Workshop Physics Tools extend the functionality of Excel 4.0, 5.0, and 7.0 to facilitate ways that are commonly used in a laboratory-based
science curriculum. The tools simplify tasks such as:
- Creating XY Scatter Plots with title, axis, and series labels
- Manipulation and analysis of XY Scatter Plots
- Overlaying multiple XY Scatter Plots
- Translating Excel spreadsheet formulas into pneumonic representations
- Fitting polynomial functions to experimental data
The tools which provide this extended functionality are accessed with two custom toolbars: WP Standard and WP Active Chart, and the current
Wptools menu which is added to Excel's menu bar.
