Conceptual Kinematics provides the busy teacher with an effective,
self-paced tutorial. An ideal complement to sonic ranger experiments,
Conceptual Kinematics gives your students the practice they need to
understand and apply the definitions of position, velocity, and
acceleration.
Conceptual Kinematics presents animations, strobe photographs, and multiple graphical representations of motion. The tutorial questions have distracter responses
based on common student misconceptions, so that any conceptual problems held by students will be quickly detected. When an incorrect response is given, the
program repeats the animation and offers additional information, such as a velocity meter. This helps students focus their attention on the changes of the appropriate
quantity. After a student has successfully completed the tutorial questions and animations, Conceptual Kinematics switches to a quiz mode to test the learning. A
built-in record-keeping system keeps track of scores, identification, and time spent.
All students take most seriously those topics they are tested on, the Conceptual Kinematics manual provides graphical interpretation test questions that relate directly
to kinematics learned by using the program. These questions can be easily included on your traditional in-class exams. 50 pp.

REVIEWS
-
- "The software serves as
a 'virtual laboratory' in which users can run experiments, take
measurements, and plot graphs. Users can also perform what Albert
Einstein called Gedanken experiments-'though experiments' that
are impossible to conduct in a real laboratory."
- Computers in Physics, March/April 1997
-
- "Some of the simulations
even show the 'experimental set up' as a three dimensional representation
that can be viewed from any angle. This provides a great deal
of flexibility."
- Alastair Gillies and Bruce Sinclair,
Physics World, July 1997
